Peru Poison Frog Photography Tour
Tarapoto Region | Medium Difficulty | High Species Diversity
This immersive photography tour takes you deep into the rainforests of northern Peru, one of the most diverse poison frog regions on the planet. Based around the Tarapoto and Huallaga River areas, this trip is designed for photographers who want serious field time, rare species, and hands-on instruction in challenging but rewarding rainforest conditions.
Over the course of 7 days, we’ll explore a wide range of habitats allowing us to photograph an exceptional variety of poison frogs and other tropical wildlife. Peru offers unmatched diversity, and this tour is built to maximize both species variety and quality photographic opportunities.
This tour is run in close collaboration with Angel Chujutalli Del Castillo of Dendrobirds Peru, one of the most respected frog experts and field guides in the country. Angel has spent years working throughout the Tarapoto region and beyond, with an unmatched knowledge of local poison frog species, habitats, and seasonal behavior.
The difficulty level is moderate. Expect long days in the field, humid conditions, muddy trails, and hikes that can range from short walks to longer excursions involving boats and uneven terrain. You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable being active and spending extended time outdoors.
Photography will focus primarily on ethical, natural setups using leaves, branches, and forest perches to create clean, striking images, while still working within the animals’ natural habitat. In-situ photography is possible and can be accommodated for those who want to push themselves creatively.
This is a small-group tour limited to just six participants, ensuring personal instruction, flexible pacing, and plenty of time with each species. Whether you’re new to macro photography or an experienced shooter looking to refine your technique, you’ll receive dedicated guidance on lighting, composition, and field workflow.
If you’re looking for a tour that prioritizes species diversity, authentic rainforest experience, and real photographic growth, this Peru expedition delivers in a big way.
