Colombia Poison Frog Photography Tour

Pacific Slope & Andean Foothills | Moderate to Challenging Difficulty | Rare & Iconic Species

This immersive photography tour takes you deep into the rainforests of southwestern Colombia, home to some of the most iconic and sought-after poison dart frogs on Earth. Based across the Pacific slope and Andean foothills near Cali, Nariño, and Buenaventura, this trip is designed for photographers who want rare species, intentional field time, and hands-on instruction in challenging but highly rewarding environments.

Over the course of 7 days, we’ll work across multiple habitats, each selected specifically for its unique frog populations. Rather than focusing on sheer numbers, this tour prioritizes high-value, legendary species, giving us repeated opportunities to photograph different morphs and populations under ideal conditions.

Species targets include multiple populations of Oophaga sylvatica such as Whitefoot, Koi, cream-leg variants, and Yellowfoot, as well as Oophaga lehmanni (red morph), Oophaga anchicayensis “Large Redhead”, and Andinobates bombetes. This lineup represents some of the most difficult and restricted poison frogs to photograph anywhere in the world.

The difficulty level is moderate to challenging. Expect humid conditions, muddy forest trails, elevation changes, and long but manageable days in the field. Some locations require road travel, hikes of varying difficulty, and patience in dense rainforest terrain. You don’t need extreme fitness, but you should be comfortable spending extended time outdoors in tropical conditions and capable of doing multiple hour hikes if needed.

Photography will focus on ethical, natural setups using forest elements such as leaves, moss, and perches to create clean, powerful images while respecting each animal’s habitat and behavior. In-situ photography is also possible for those who want to challenge themselves creatively and document frogs within their natural surroundings.

This is a small-group tour limited to just 3 participants, ensuring personalized instruction, flexible pacing, and unhurried time with each species. I’ll work closely with each photographer on lighting, composition, field technique, and decision-making specific to poison frog photography.

If you’re looking for a tour that prioritizes rare species, meaningful access, and high-level photographic opportunities, this Colombia expedition offers an experience that very few photographers ever get.
